Art Series by Claudia Morales

“VHS Horror” is a series about ghosts, inspired by a scene from one of my favorite movies, Amelie. She was in an amusement park and said: “I know the stranger in the pictures. He’s a ghost. He’s invisible, Mr. Quincampoix. He only appears when the film is developed. When a girl has her photo taken, he goes “Oooh!” in her ear. That’s how he got caught, Mr. Quincampoix.”

That is how I got the idea of having my own ghost. I love the images because they reflect mystery and curiosity, because I portray the spirit in the middle of nature, looking at the camera, and add VHS effects. It helped me to give the photos an antique feel, as if it were a broken film. A scary movie.

When I was planning and editing the photographs I listened to one of my favorite songs, “Pa Pa Power” by Dead Man’s Bones. Music helped me to imagine disturbing shots. “We won’t destroy you. No, we will not destroy you.”
