Interview and Giveaway with Kip & Co

Interview of Kate Heppell by Freya Bennett

Hi Kate, How are you?

Awesome–just spent the afternoon ferreting in antique stores in Tyabb on the Mornington Peninsula.

Where are you based?

I live in St Kilda, Melbourne, but am spending the weekend with my family in Merricks.

Tell us a little bit about Kip&Co.

Kip&Co is the love child of me and my two besties Kate and Hayley (who are also sisters). It started with a tiny, curated collection of bright bold wild printed bedding but has grown up with us. Kip&Co is now in every corner of the home–cushions, beanbags, art, rugs, heaps of awesome stuff for all the cool babies kicking around and of course, a tonne of bedding. We’ve expanded, but our brand is still focused on offering interiors that are fashion forward, confident, and fun.

Where did the idea come from?

We’d wanted to start a business for a while but couldn’t land on an idea that felt right. Inspired by an amazing trip overseas, Kate came home with the realisation that there was a huge gap in the Australian bedding market for fashion focused bedding…and Kip&Co was born!

We LOVE your bright coloured quilt covers, who designs the prints?

We all like to stay involved in every part of the business–including design–so we share the work amongst us.

How do you feel colours can affect people’s moods?

We really believe that colour and texture can affect mood. In fact, last year we looked into colour therapy and how important it can be in mental health as part of a collaboration we did for R U OK? Day. It’s so great to be able to freshen up your home each season to keep things feeling fresh and energetic, without having to spend a tonne on renovations. Doing little things like new bedding, or cushions can really brighten your home, and brighten your mood. 🙂

What advice do you have for people wanting to feel happier in their space?

Invest in your home in the same way you would invest in your well being. Take the time and put in the effort to really treat your house like a sanctuary–a place of love, entertainment, and laughter! I think having dinner parties (or dance parties) and creating memories in your home is also super important to making your story.

What’s one of the best interior styling tips you have for teenagers?

I think it’s the same for all ages–create your own individual style that makes you happy. And don’t ever be afraid of colour.

What is the best lesson you’ve learnt so far about running a business?

I learn something new every week! Probably every day, actually. I still think having amazing images and investing in that first photo shoot was one of the best things we did.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Everywhere! We travel a lot and love the inspiration we get from different cultures around the globe. But local inspiration is just as critical – including things we doodle or kids design.

What advice do you have for your 13-year-old self?

Don’t worry about that skater boy…he ain’t the one for you. 😉

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

Fly. With no turbulence.

Where can we see more of your gorgeous stuff?
