MEET OUR NEW INTERN: Sammy

Interview of Sammy by Freya Bennett

Tell us a little about yourself—where you’re from, what you’re into, and what lights you up.

Hi everyone! I’m Sammy, and I’m excited to be joining Ramona as the new editorial and PR intern. I’ve called Melbourne home all my life, and grew up in Hampton, Bayside. Right now, I’m in my second year of a Bachelor of Professional Communication at RMIT, majoring in Public Relations and I’m loving it! When I’m not doing uni work or spending time with my friends and family, you’ll usually find me curled up in my bed reading my kindle and making my way through my never ending TBR list. Reading is my biggest passion, and I hope to work in publishing one day so being surrounded by books and spending some time to myself is what lights me up!

What’s something creative or cool you’ve worked on recently?

As I’m reaching the end of my teen years, I’ve been so excited to start travelling on my own. Late last year I went to Japan, and since coming home, I’ve been putting together a scrapbook filled with my favourite photos and little notes about the best moments from each day. It’s been such a great way to relive the trip and hold onto all the memories.

Who are your biggest influences or inspirations (creative or otherwise)?

I’ve been loving watching @StephBohrer on YouTube for years now. She lives in a small beach town and does a range of vlogs whether its lifestyle, book related (which is her specialty), spending time with friends, or even mental health related videos, whether that’s a lazy day off or doing things alone that she never thought she could do. She’s been such a big influence for me in chasing the things that make me feel happy and pursuing my passions!

What’s a topic you could talk about for hours without getting bored?

I would say the experience of growing up and learning to be your own best friend. Transitioning from school to the adult world is scary, and I think seeing your friendships, priorities and support systems changing is so surreal but exciting. It’s been a time for me where I’ve had to unlearn everything about myself and get to know myself all over again. I’ve had to explore what I really want from life, while also becoming clearer about what I don’t want. It’s been a rollercoaster, but it’s been amazing so far and I’m excited for what’s to come!

What drew you to this internship, and what do you hope to get out of it?

When I was searching for internships, Ramona immediately stood out because it felt like a perfect fit for my personality. The range of topics Ramona covers, including mental health, feminism, music, books, body positivity and more really resonated with me. I wanted to find an internship which allowed me to build on my PR skills, whilst also resonating with who I was as a person and allowing me to dive into topics which genuinely interest me. So far, Ramona has been so incredible in giving me the creative freedom to experiment and bring my ideas to life. I truly believe this experience will be so important in building my confidence and clarity on where I want to take my future career.

What does a perfect day look like for you?

Spending the day at the beach with friends and reading a Sally Rooney book.

Can you share a fun fact or surprising quirk about yourself?

I’m an identical twin, and so is my dad!
