Lexi Green of Safety First Shares Their Five Favourite Lyrics

Words by Lexi Green

Safety First songwriter / vocalist Lexi Green (they/them) shares their five favourite lyrics from the band’s sophomore EP Not As Boring As It Sounds.

Steered by Lexi’s distinct Australian accent and conversational, narrative-driven vocals, the EP is a masterclass in charming indie rock that wraps deeply personal themes in clouds of fuzzy melodies. With an impeccable attention to detail, a dash of observational humour and glistening, intertwining guitars, Not As Boring As It Sounds proves to be an extremely humble title to the band’s second body of work.

Masking personal diary entries with lyrics that read like a sitcom script, Not As Boring As It Sounds perseveres through turmoil with a smile. Even when Lexi is at their most vulnerable and defeated, there is always a glimmer of hope that everything will be okay – which of course, is anything but boring.

LEXI’S FIVE FAVOURITE LYRICS:

  1. “Wanna split myself into five people and live five different lives” – Bracelet

Sometimes, I find myself paralysed by the extremely low stakes choices I have to make in my life. I think it would be so nice if I could just have a handful of clones running around so I didn’t have to deal with that. At the very least I would love to watch that unfold!

  1. “I used to want to be like you. Now I wish you were more like me” – Mushrooms

In school I would compare myself to the people around me, and I felt like I wasn’t cool, or confident or smart enough. But a lot of my school friends ended up just working 9-5 office jobs, and here I am as a musician, with something in my life I really care about and can put every part of myself into, so there’s no question who I would rather be. I still do compare myself to others a lot, but I just have to remember to be patient, and in 20 years maybe they’ll fall off hard or something, you never know!

  1. “He enters through the window and smiles like broken glass” – That’s What You’re Like

I’m just really proud of this as a descriptive line. The “broken glass” synergises with “window” so well (that wasn’t intentional). And without listening to any other part of the song I feel like you get an idea of exactly what kind of person this guy is.

  1. “I’m the star of a movie […] and it’s not as boring as it sounds” – This Song Reminds Me Of Friends I Don’t Speak To Anymore

This line feels very textbook but I still love it! Comparing my life to a movie in 2025? I guess if anyone’s life WAS a movie it would be really boring. Badly written dialogue, plot threads that go nowhere, and even if something exciting does happen, the pacing is all off.

  1. “Hungover… without any closure” – Bracelet

I think the only thing worse than not having closure is being hungover on top of that. I struggle not to laugh whenever I sing this lyric. Like, how much worse can things possibly get? The worst thing is that it is at the same time so real.
