Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Hayley Kim, and I am an illustrator, a graphic designer, a traveler, a dreamer, and a flower-lover based in New York.
How did you get started in illustration?
When I was in elementary school, I was the type of kid who draws comics while the class is going on and show them to my classmates. I was serious about art and illustration ever since then.
What do you enjoy about the medium?
Although it has been only a few months since I started digital illustrations, I find it really convenient, time-saving, and interesting. The thing I like about using Photoshop is that I can easily mimic the texture of almost every media. However, I still love using colored pencils because of its genuine texture.
Tell us a bit about your work process.
My work process is really simple and straightforward. I usually carry my sketchbook around with me and do sketches or take some notes when I get inspired. When I get back home, I start drawing right onto Photoshop using Cintiq. From the sketch to the final product, I only use Photoshop.
What inspires your work?
I capture feelings and moments of life. It is all about how I spend the day and how I feel about it. Everything around me, from my close friends to a cup of coffee I drink in the morning, is an inspiration for my artwork.
What are some goals for your artistic practice in this next year?
I really want to win illustration competitions this year, and I want to hold an exhibition. These are two of my goals for next year.
Do you have any favorite projects or images you’ve worked on?
Last winter, friends from my college and I made calendars together and sold them at art fairs. Seven of us chose one or two months and made illustrations about them. I chose May, my favorite month of a year. Although it was cold while I was working on it, I felt like it was already May and I was so ready to have a picnic.
How do you like to spend your time when you aren’t making art?
In the summertime, I love to go out for a walk. Dumbo is one of my favorite places to go and do some sketches. When it is not so warm and sunny, I usually stay at home and read books. I am reading the Anne of Green Gable series these days.
