MEET OUR INTERNS // Ali, Alyssa, Briony, Dani, Elise, Hope, Isa and Julie
Name, age, location: Alexandra Coulton (Ali for short), 23, Wollongong Australia
What do you love about being a girl?
Just about everything! Wow, where to begin… I love the power of girls when they band together, I love how understanding and nurturing female friendships are, and I love the resilience we have. We are literally thriving in a world that is (sadly) built for men. Times are tough, but I know we’ll make it out alright.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
Probably the ability to silence mansplainers.
What’s your favourite colour?
Red (yes, I am a three year old at heart).
Name, age, location: Alyssa Bedford (but since I’m terribly pretentious I also have a pen name–Emily Duran), 17, New Mexico, USA
If you could meet anyone dead or alive, who would it be?
I would have to meet Jane Austen. First and foremost, because her books and the movies based on her books were a huge part of my childhood. I remember watching Pride & Prejudice with my babysitter for the first time, and basically, I was hooked from there. But I’d love to meet her, and hear about the fiery and free spirited girls she wrote about, what she thought of women’s roles in her day, her creative process, everything.
What was the best gift you’ve ever received?
Either a set of some of the original published copies of The Lord of The Rings trilogy or an antique pocket watch that my boyfriend gave me with owls and flowers all over it and it’s always on 11:11 for good luck. Between those two. For sure.
If you could time travel, where would you go?
I would probably fit in really well at Woodstock…so the 1960’s. Flower power to the people!
Name, age, location: Briony Brake, 20, Bournemouth, UK
What’s one item on your bucket list?
See a little more of the world, maybe America, maybe the Northern Lights.
What’s your favourite colour?
Blue! My entire wardrobe consists of varying shades of blue through to black (second favourite).
If you could have dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be?
Someone who won’t judge me for being such a fussy eater and for not eating my greens. I’m only slightly kidding. Probably someone like Audrey Hepburn if she were still alive–she managed to stay so kind after dealing with so much hardship in her life, and is such a role model.
Name, age, location: Dani Leever, 21, Melbourne Australia
If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?
Probably outer space. Only if it was cute and pretty and there were some rad alien babes to hang out with – not if it is as spooky as it seems in science text books.
What’s your favourite book?
Fight Club or Haunted by Chuck Palahnuik!
Name, age, location: Elise Langford, 20, Brisbane Australia
What are five things that fascinate you?
How much my dog is able to eat, anyone who is musically talented, sustainable farming, human psychology, and how I still manage to have glitter all over me from a costume I wore months ago.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Can’t Get Enough of Myself by Santigold. So groovy!
What do you wish you could change about the world?
I would slow everything down a bit. It’s no wonder people are stressed when they are living in fast-forward mode constantly. Also, free fairy bread.
Name, age, location: Hope Antonellis, 17, Massachusetts, USA
What’s your spirit animal?
Hmmm, I feel like I could be a million animals to fit certain parts of myself! Recently, I have been feeling more of a rabbit, and a little like a snake. It’s very ironic since snakes eat rabbits, maybe I’m a rabbit in the belly of a snake. I am very gentle and cautious but am constantly shedding my skin and going after for what I want.
If you could go anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?
Japan! I would love to visit the kitty cafe’s to share a cup of tea with furry friends. Maybe even the bottom of the ocean if I was brave enough.
If you could wake up with a new talent, what would it be?
This question is so tricky! I wish I had musical talent, my mind can’t keep up with all of the intricacies of notes and harmonies. Humans who can keep up with all of the layers of music amaze me.
Name, age, location: Isa Denney Strother, 16, Christchurch New Zealand
List three of your favorite things: Sweatshirts, my girlfriend, and the moon.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
“Don’t worry about it; If you can change, change it. If you can’t, quit your bitching.” and “Never care what people think you are; choose your principles and stick to them.” (both passed on from my granddad by my mum)
What is something not many people know about you?
Something people don’t know about me is a really hard question since I’d basically give everyone anything they wanted of me…Most people know at least something about me. I guess, most people wouldn’t guess I have really bad anxiety and used to have severe OCD or that I’m a depressive person. Usually I try to keep those things away from people but I don’t really mind it they know-I guess it’d explain a lot about me to them.
Name, age, location: Julie Young, 17, Maryland, USA
What’s your favorite quote?
One of my favorite quotes would have to be from my favorite band, Twenty One Pilots. The quote is, “the sun will rise and we will try again.” I love this quote because it reminds me that if I’m ever having a bad day there is always another chance to turn it around.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
Someone once told me, “If you’re scared to do something, it’s probably a good idea to do it.” I love this advice because often times I will overthink what to do to the point that I end up doing nothing at all, which is not what I want. This advice reminds me to just do it and hope for the best and if it doesn’t turn out how I wanted it, I can always learn from that situation.
What’s your favourite movie?
This is so hard for me to answer because I love movies, but if I had to choose I would have to say Unbroken. Unbroken is such a sad movie but the main character shows such strength and hope that it is just so inspiring.
