ARTIST FEATURE: Cachete Jack

Interview of Cachete Jack by Sophie Pellegrini // We think that working in many mediums opens your mind. If you experiment, your work will evolve!

Hi Cachete Jack! Can you tell us a bit about yourselves?

Raquel Fanjul, born January 1988 and Nuria Bellver, born January 1988. 2 women, 2 horoscopes, 2 minds, 4 hands, 1 team. “The union makes the strongest power”

Before we go any further, I have to ask — where did the name “Cachete Jack” come from?

The name comes from one night doing surrealistic jokes.

How did you come to start working together as an artistic duo?

We started to work together in 2011, the last year of our Fine Arts degree in Valencia, Spain.

What mediums do you work in? Do you have a favorite?

We bought a Cintiq not long ago but we love to use pencils! We also work with collage techniques, mural painting, etc… We think that working in many mediums opens your mind. If you experiment, your work will evolve!

What is your work process like, particularly considering you are a team of two?
Our process is part of our life because the ideas are around and we are always on alert to catch them. We really connect in our sense of humor so we do brainstorming and we choose the best sketches, then we choose the best colour palettes! We are both thinkers and makers.
What’s the best part of working as a duo instead of independently?
The best part is having fun with your friend while you work.
How would you describe the Cachete Jack aesthetic?
Quirky, powerful, and fun.
When you aren’t making art, how do you spend your time?
We enjoy spending time alone, having fun with friends, dancing, singing, reading, thinking, eating, sleeping… but always we keep eye to create something new!
Do you have any projects you’re currently working on that you can tell us about?
Right now we are working on our next exhibition in Valencia. It will be a compilation of 20 images (risographs) about “escape/running away.” We are also preparing a workshop in Armenia and have an exhibition coming soon in New York!!
