What To Say To Your Friend When They Are Struggling With Depression

Writing by Andie Reyes // illustration by Zhigang

I know you have been so sad lately. There are so many things running through your head that sometimes I don’t understand but I will do my best to.

You have come so far as to think that you are an “ugly” person, but when I talk to you, even just the sound of your voice seems to me the cutest thing in the world.

I will be here to just love you. I will be with you even when you don’t want to be with yourself. Sometimes you don’t know how you feel and you push me away because you feel like you don’t deserve love.

I know you’ve been through so much and  sometimes it seems that no one understands you but I want you to know that I will be there for you. If you want to cry, know that you can always cry on my shoulder.

I know you don’t always want company so I will understand that too and when your sadness and anger pass and you feel like a friend – call me – I will be there to answer the phone and listen to you. I will try to make you laugh, because the sadness you feel today will go away and you will smile again.

You asked me recently how you can keep your faith when you feel like this and I suppose faith is when you believe in something without proof.  I know at the moment that you have lost faith in yourself and the universe – but I also know it will return. For now, I will hold your faith for you.

Tadeo, my friend, you have bought so much joy into my life, I hope I can bring some joy into yours soon too. You are beautiful, smart and such a good soul. Your heart will heal soon and your happiness will return. I have faith.
