ASK JANE: My Period Looks Like Red Wine, is this Normal?

Blood that is dark purple or even blue in colour generally indicates high oestrogen levels.

In addition to its dark colour, purple or blue blood may also contains clots and lasts longer than a week.

I think your question about whether this is normal is really you asking if this is okay. If this is the case, it’s hard to answer without knowing more about your cycle and other symptoms. It is possible your oestrogen levels are high in relation to progesterone, causing an imbalance.

If you have other symptoms that trouble you and interfere with your usual routine then I suggest getting your hormone levels tested. If they are imbalanced have a look at Lara Briden’s Period Repair Manual for ways to regain balance, or see a trusted natural health practitioner. You may be amazed at the difference this can make to your whole cyclic experience!

If you are not particularly troubled by your periods or premenstrual symptoms, then there is nothing to worry about!

Hope this helps!

Love,
Jane
