It’s ironic that I’ve only just started a love affair with good quality bedsheets at a time when I am getting the least amount of sleep I’ve ever had.
I gave birth six months ago to an adorable little gremlin, who actually, for the most part, sleeps very well. But at age 37, even the once a night bottle she requires, is enough to make me feel like a husk of a human. Add to that the needs of my energetic 6-and-a-half-year-old and crawling to bed at the end of the night is my favourite part of the day.
Since becoming parents, my partner and I have been traversing the path of least resistance when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. And for my eldest, sleep came most easily when she was lying on my arm, messy hair up my nose, legs draped haphazardly over my body. But since having our latest edition, my husband has stepped into this role with our eldest and I have now upgraded to the spare bed with a cot at my feet and despite the midnight wake ups, I am relishing the luxury of having a bed to myself for the first time in my adult existence.
I try to get the best quality sleep I can between feeds, and this is where Beddie comes in. Being a new luxury bedsheet nerd, I wanted to find out exactly what goes into creating such gorgeously luxurious sheets. I chatted to Deb about the inspiration behind Beddie:
What inspired you to start Beddie?
With a foundation in fine art and graphic design, I’ve always been captivated by the emotive power of colour. As a mother, nothing brings me more solace after a taxing day of balancing work and parenting than sinking into the embrace of a cosy bed. It was this fusion of my passion for comfort, the pursuit of restful sleep, and an appreciation for vibrant design that inspired me to venture into bedding. I was also exceedingly frustrated by the amount of sheets in my linen cupboard that had no size labels, popped off the bed due to not being deep enough and generally scratchy and thinning cotton. A seed was sewn over many years when I look back at the evolution of Beddie.
Juggling the responsibilities of staying home with three children while my husband’s demanding job often took him away, I yearned to embark on a venture that would not only nurture my creative spirit but also stand as a testament to my dedication and resilience as a mother and entrepreneur.
Stay at home Mothers are heroes, despite the exhaustion of caring for young kids, it never fails to amaze me what creativity we come up with! What is your favourite thing about beddie?
In my business, there are two components that hold a special place in my heart: the creative process and the connection with my customers. Designing and creating bedding is not just a job for me; it’s a true passion. However, as a startup, I find myself immersed in administrative tasks and nurturing the business most of the time, leaving only a small portion of time for the enjoyable creative work. But as I envision growth, my goal is to allocate more time to designing, offering a wider array of designs for my customers to enjoy regularly.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of running a business, what truly brings me joy is the interaction with my customers. The heartfelt emails expressing nostalgia and admiration for the quality of my bedding truly resonate with me. It’s immensely gratifying to know that my creations evoke such positive emotions. From the vibrant designs to the meticulous craftsmanship, I’ve poured my heart into every aspect of my bedding, from the specialty cotton to the labelling and thoughtful features. My ultimate aim has always been to produce bedding that not only delights with its cheerful designs but also exceeds expectations with its premium quality.
Your prints are what originally drew me to Beddie. As an only child, I had an obsession with the Brady Bunch and your sheets make me feel like I’m living in my very own episode, what goes into choosing your stunning prints?
My first batch of prints get their mojo from retro wallpapers! Those funky, nostalgic patterns that take you on a trip down memory lane. Being taken back to the days spent at Nanna’s place, where life was all about simple pleasures like cosying up with a cup of tea and stringing green beans for Sunday lunch. Surrounded by family, enveloped in love and security.
As it turns out, I’m not the only one feeling the warm fuzzies. My inbox is flooded with emails from customers who are right there with me, reminiscing about those same heartwarming moments. It’s like these designs have a secret superpower—they tap into our shared memories and sprinkle a little bit of joy into our lives.

I won’t admit how long I keep my sheets on for, but suffice to say, it’s a bit longer than that haha!
