There is no recipe book to success
This is something that I really struggled with when I first started in the music industry, I was young and looking for guidance. Unlike other industries, you can’t really look at how others who have succeeded and follow that recipe as such. In the music industry there is not one set guild and/or approach to becoming successful. At the end of the day you need to be passionate and believe in what you’re doing.
Everyone judges and measures success differently, so my advice is to celebrate all the wins (big or small) along the way.
No one can follow the same path
No two people in the music industry will ever have the same path or journey. It is important to focus on your own growth, and don’t compare yourself to others.
You are more than an artist
To be an artist is to be more than just a creator, especially in the early days. You will find yourself being an actor, marketer, videographer, accountant…. the list could go on. But I guess the point is that you require and acquire more skills than you would have ever thought possible. You are not JUST an artist.
The right people make the biggest difference
I have heard absolute horror stories of artists in relation to their teams. My advice (take it with a grain of salt) would be to not be in a rush, and make sure your team has the same values and vision as you. You want them to value you as an artist and a person as they are an extension of you. They need to feel like family.
There will alway be haters
Regardless of what you do there will always be haters, that hate what you do, hate that you’re living your dream and try to put you down. Don’t get caught up in all the negativity, life is too short. Be true to yourself and follow your path, and on the way don’t let others sway your perspective and goals, it’s your journey. Surround yourself with positive people that bring out the best in you. This all sounds super clique but it really is important to remember.
