Ocean Rhythms is paving the way for gender equality at Australian music festivals, announcing an all-female (you heard right!) line-up for their 2018 festival. The indie/rhythm & blues beach bash is now in its third year as part of New South Wales’ long running Old Bar Beach festival.

Event booker, Jacob “Bourky” Bourke says he was too aware of the gender imbalance plaguing band line-ups at Aussie festivals and jumped on the opportunity to shake things up: “Last year I worked for 20 festivals around Australia and you really notice it. triple j have called it out, Camp Cope called it out at Falls Festival, it’s definitely something that the music industry needs to hear right now.”

If the last two years on the major festival circuit are anything to go by, it’s become common place to expect that female or female-fronted acts will occupy a small fraction of a festival bill: “I’m not saying every festival should be female only, it’s about aiming for more diversity in the line ups, not having 25 male acts and 3 female acts like it’s normal” says Bourke.

With past headliners including Kim Churchill and Tash Sultana, this year’s Ocean Rhythms “femme-fuelled” line-up is headed by ARIA award winner Amy Shark, joined by a wicked bill featuring Angie McMahon, Sammi Constantine, Elki and many more.
