Art Series by Shirley Yang Crutchfield
My work is rooted in a desire to portray women with a sense of reverence that has historically been reserved for kings and saints. I use Renaissance water gilding techniques with 24K gold leaf and oil on panel, an intentionally meticulous process that requires time, precision, and care. The gold is not just decorative, it carries meaning. It reflects light in a way that feels sacred and becomes a visual language for honoring the strength, complexity, and inner life of the women I paint. I’m drawn to women who have built, led, and shaped the world in their own way, and my intention is always to capture not just how they are seen, but who they are beneath that.
This body of work emerged during a time when I was searching for a sense of self again. After a career in tech and becoming a mother, I experienced a loss of identity that I hadn’t expected. Returning to painting became a way to reconnect with that part of myself. Over time, it evolved into something much larger, a practice centered on honoring the legacies of women.
